Basic Grammar
Master the foundation of English — parts of speech, tenses, and sentence structure.

Every word in English belongs to one of eight parts of speech:
- Noun — Name of person, place, thing (dog, India, book)
- Pronoun — Replaces a noun (he, she, they, it)
- Verb — Action word (run, eat, study, write)
- Adjective — Describes a noun (big, beautiful, smart)
- Adverb — Describes a verb (quickly, very, well)
- Preposition — Shows position (in, on, at, under)
- Conjunction — Joins words/sentences (and, but, or)
- Interjection — Expresses emotion (Wow! Oh! Hurray!)

1. Simple Present
Used for habits, facts, and routines.
- I study English every day.
- She works at a bank.
- The sun rises in the east.
2. Present Continuous
Used for actions happening right now.
- I am studying English now.
- They are playing cricket.
3. Present Perfect
Used for actions completed recently or with relevance to now.
- I have finished my homework.
- She has visited London twice.
Past Tenses
- Simple Past: I went to school yesterday.
- Past Continuous: I was reading a book.
- Past Perfect: I had finished before he arrived.
Future Tenses
- Simple Future: I will study tomorrow.
- Future Continuous: I will be studying at 8 PM.
- Going to: I am going to learn Python.
A basic English sentence follows the SVO pattern:
- Subject + Verb + Object
- Example: Rahul (S) reads (V) books (O).
Types of Sentences:
- Declarative: She is a teacher. (statement)
- Interrogative: Is she a teacher? (question)
- Imperative: Please sit down. (command)
- Exclamatory: What a beautiful day! (emotion)

English has 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds.
Common Vowel Sounds:
- /æ/ as in "cat", "bat", "man"
- /iː/ as in "see", "tree", "be"
- /ɒ/ as in "hot", "lot", "got"
- /uː/ as in "food", "moon", "tool"
Practice these minimal pairs: sit/seat, ship/sheep, bit/beat — focus on the vowel length!
Stress means saying one syllable louder/longer than others. Wrong stress can change meaning!
- REcord (noun) vs reCORD (verb)
- PREsent (noun) vs preSENT (verb)
- PERmit (noun) vs perMIT (verb)
Rules of Stress:
- 2-syllable nouns: stress on 1st syllable (TAble, DOCtor)
- 2-syllable verbs: stress on 2nd syllable (beLIEVE, deCIDE)
- Words ending in "-tion": stress on syllable before "-tion" (eduCAtion)
Intonation is the rise and fall of your voice. It conveys meaning and emotions.
- Falling intonation ↘ — Statements and wh-questions: "Where do you live? ↘"
- Rising intonation ↗ — Yes/No questions: "Do you like coffee? ↗"
- Fall-rise ↘↗ — Uncertainty or politeness: "I'm not sure... ↘↗"

"The exam was a piece of cake!" = The exam was very easy.
"I've been burning the midnight oil preparing for the interview." = I've been studying/working very late.

At a Restaurant:
- "Could I have the menu, please?"
- "I'd like to order the chicken biryani."
- "Can I have the bill, please?"
Asking for Directions:
- "Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the station?"
- "Is there a bank nearby?"
- "How far is it from here?"
